At rise the BELL of a clock tower can be heard. Lights begin to glow beneath the fog. Arms jut out of the viewing windows of the metal doors upstage. Slowly, up through the fog, arms, heads, and backs appear as the INMATES rise out of the fog.

The sound builds and THREE KEEPERS appear as backlit silhouettes in the open doorways.

They move and slam the metal doors closed one at a time in tempo with the music. An abrupt light change and then silence. The KEEPERS exit up the stairs to the JINGLING of their metal keys.
